The success story that is Michael Hill Jeweller today began in 1979 when Michael Hill opened his first store in the New Zealand town of Whangarei, just north of Auckland. Michael's vision was to create a unique retail jewellery experience, with dramatically different store designs and a product range devoted exclusively to jewellery – and to promote it with high impact advertising.
The formula certainly worked and the company grew rapidly, expanding to 10 stores by 1987 – the same year it was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange.
1987 proved to be an auspicious year, with Michael Hill Jeweller crossing the Tasman to open its first two Australian stores in the Brisbane suburbs of Indooroopilly and Chermside.
Today, Michael Hill Jeweller is Australasia's pre-eminent retail jewellery chain, with over 130 stores throughout New Zealand, Australia and Canada as of 2002. It is owned and operated by Michael Hill International.
Of paramount importance to the company is the ability to offer world class quality and design at an accessible price. Many people are surprised to learn that much of our product is crafted by our own jewellers at our manufacturing divisions in Australia and New Zealand.
Michael Hill Jeweller is the winner of numerous prestigious retail and design awards, including the celebrated 2000 and 2002 Australian gemstone design award.
