Jobs, Careers & Employment @ NSW State Government | The NSW Public Sector consists of approximately 80 government departments and statutory authorities. These are known as 'agencies' and are responsible for working together to provide the people of NSW with responsive and accessible services.
Some examples of the services they provide are:
- protecting natural resources and cultural assets (eg Department of Environment and Conservation and Ministry for the Arts.
- maintaining public order and safety (eg the Police Service and the Department of Corrective Services) · providing infrastructure (eg State Rail, the Roads and Traffic Authority, and State Transit.
- promoting social justice (eg the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Community Relations Commission) developing the market and promoting economic development in NSW (the Department of State and Regional Development).
- services to the public (eg the Department of Health and Department of Education and Training).
To provide these services, the Government employs people in a range of interesting and challenging jobs including lawyers, scientists, rangers, gardeners, librarians, and financial and clerical personnel.
To ensure that the best person is selected for each job, appointments to positions are on the basis of merit. This means that the person who is judged most likely to be the best performer of the duties of the position, based on assessing the relevant abilities, qualifications, experience, standard of work performance and personal qualities is recommended for the appointment.
